Lastovo Archipelago - sailing destination, part 2

Zaklopatica bay is situated on the northern part of island Lastovo. It has a natural shelter from waves arising from northwest summer winds, an islet named Zaklopatica, which is situated just in front of the bay. Unfortunately islet Zaklopatica isn't that high to shelter the bay from Bora, unpleasant northeast wind, so we won’t recommend you to visit Zaklopatica in time of Bora. Zaklopatica is very popular among sailors. With depth of 15m, you can anchor in the bay, or berth a sailboat on quays or jetties and use electricity, water, sanitary facilities and Wi-Fi. Zaklopatica is well known as a great spot for diving because of the rich collection of underwater flora and fauna. If you are lucky you can even see the rare bird species called Kaukala. If you climb a bit up inland you'll enjoy a fabulous view on island KorĨula and a breathtaking sunset. After a full day of diving and swimming, you can enjoy in leisurely walks and many restaurants offering the best of Lastovo’s traditional cuisine.

Lastovo village is not far so we recommend you to rent a car or scooter, or take a bus and visit this quaint place. Lastovo is an old medieval town with a long history, surrounded by mountains and forming a natural shape of an amphitheater. In Lastovo you can see beautiful family houses dating from the 15th and 16th century. They are decorated with cylindrical chimneys which the locals call “fumari” and with high broad terraces “Lastovski sulari” which are trademarks of Lastovo. There is a large number of churches of relatively small size, a testament to the island's long-standing Roman Catholic tradition. The major cultural event is ‘Poklade’ (carnival), a time of events, parties and jocks lasting from January until Ash Wednesday. In Lastovo you could visit local taverns and enjoy in local specialties, wine and original products such as olive oil, sweets made from fruits and spices, liqueurs etc.

Another interesting place we recommend to visit is Skrivena Luka. It is a lovely, small bay surrounded by pure nature and a nice town on the southern coast of the island of Lastovo. Skrivena Luka literally translated means ‘hidden bay’. And indeed, the bay is so secluded that it is not possible to see it from the open seas. Skrivena Luka is the best sheltered place on the island. Still Bora and winds from south, west and north are noticeable, and southwest winds can create waves at the entrance of the bay.

With a depth of 3-5m and muddy bottom with sand, anchoring can be tricky. Maybe you can consider restaurant moorings and jetties with water and electricity. First sight of Skrivena Luka is a lighthouse on Struga Cape, built in 1839. This lighthouse lies at the height of 70 m, at the very edge of a steep cliff that offers a splendid view of the open sea.
